Spanish city and naval base, capital and
seaport of the province of Cadiz, standing on
Cadiz Bay, an inlet of the Atlantic, 103
km/64 mi S of Seville; population (1986)
154,000. After the discovery of the Americas
1492, Cadiz became one of Europe's most vital
trade ports. The English seaman Francis Drake
burned a Spanish fleet here 1587 to prevent
the sailing of the Armada. Probably founded
by the Phoenicians about 1100 BC, it was a
centre for the tin trade with Cornwall,
England. It was recaptured from the Moors by
the king of Castile 1262. Development was
restricted by its peninsular location until a
bridge to the opposite shore of Cadiz Bay was
completed 1969.
