- Spanish city and naval base, capital and
- seaport of the province of Cadiz, standing on
- Cadiz Bay, an inlet of the Atlantic, 103
- km/64 mi S of Seville; population (1986)
- 154,000. After the discovery of the Americas
- 1492, Cadiz became one of Europe's most vital
- trade ports. The English seaman Francis Drake
- burned a Spanish fleet here 1587 to prevent
- the sailing of the Armada. Probably founded
- by the Phoenicians about 1100 BC, it was a
- centre for the tin trade with Cornwall,
- England. It was recaptured from the Moors by
- the king of Castile 1262. Development was
- restricted by its peninsular location until a
- bridge to the opposite shore of Cadiz Bay was
- completed 1969.
